Sapporo to Niseko: the bus, the train and the drive.
Transfers · Fares and times checked 11 Oct 2026
Plenty of Australians land at New Chitose, spend a night or two in Sapporo and then head for the snow. The good news is that Sapporo is the easy side: there is a reserved ski bus that picks up at city hotels, a cheap walk-on highway bus from Sapporo Station, and a train via Otaru. The catch is that each one ends somewhere different in Niseko. Here is which to pick for where you are staying, with this season’s fares and last season’s labelled where 2026–27 isn’t out yet.
Best when
- Resort Liner if you are staying in Hirafu, Hanazono, Niseko Village or Annupuri and want one ride from your hotel.
- Chuo highway bus if you are staying in Annupuri or Kutchan and want the cheapest fare.
- Train if you are stopping in Otaru on the way, with light bags.
Skip when
- The highway bus for Hirafu with ski bags: it doesn't go there.
- The train if you need to reach the lifts by lunchtime.
- Driving Nakayama Pass on your first day in a Japanese winter.
My pick
Personally I’d book the Resort Liner. You get picked up at a city hotel, you are in Hirafu by 11:10, and the bus carries on to the hotels in Niseko Village and Annupuri. That is lunch and a few afternoon runs on day one. If you are travelling light and staying near Annupuri, the Chuo highway bus does the same trip for less than half the fare.
Option 1: Hokkaido Resort Liner from Sapporo hotels
Daily from 2 Dec 2026 – 31 Mar 2027. ¥6,000 adult, ¥5,000 child (3–11), one way, reservation required. One morning bus collects from six city hotels and goes to Niseko; two afternoon buses come back. The operator may ask you to change buses when leaving Sapporo, and may shift hotel pick-up times depending on bookings, so check your confirmation.
| Stop | Time |
|---|---|
| New Otani Inn Sapporo | 7:35 |
| Keio Plaza Hotel Sapporo | 7:45 |
| Sapporo Prince Hotel | 7:55 |
| Mercure Hotel Sapporo | 8:10 |
| Sapporo Tokyu REI Hotel | 8:15 |
| Sapporo Excel Hotel Tokyu | 8:25 |
| Hirafu Welcome Center | 11:10 |
| The Green Leaf Niseko Village | 11:30 |
| Hilton Niseko Village | 11:35 |
| Leaves Hirafu Welcome Center | Sapporo hotels |
|---|---|
| 14:00 | 16:30–17:10 |
| 16:35 | 19:05–19:45 |
Option 2: Chuo Bus Highway Niseko (walk-on)
A regular highway bus, not a ski bus. No booking, you pay when you get off, and Chuo Bus accepts IC cards (tap on and tap off). It runs Sapporo Station → Otaru → Yoichi → Kutchan → the Annupuri side of Niseko, ending at Niseko Iroha. On last winter’s timetable it left Sapporo Station at 8:35, 10:35, 13:35 and reached the Annupuri ski area stop at 11:42, 13:42, 16:42.
| From | Adult |
|---|---|
| Niseko Iroha (Annupuri end) | ¥2,820 |
| Hondori | ¥2,560 |
| Kutchan Jujigai | ¥2,320 |
It does not stop in Hirafu village. For Hirafu, get off at Kutchan and take the Niseko Bus Kutchan line (¥500 last season) or a taxi. The 2026–27 winter timetable had not been posted when we checked.
Option 3: Chuo Bus ski bus (last season)
The reserved ski bus Niseko United lists. 2026–27 times were not out when we checked (Niseko United says around October). Last season (13 Dec 2025 – 22 Mar 2026) it left JR Sapporo Station North Gate at 7:50 and 9:20, called at Makomanai subway station, and reached Hirafu at 10:56 and 12:26 before Hilton Niseko Village and Annupuri. Fares were ¥6,000 one way or ¥10,000 return for adults.
Option 4: JR via Otaru
Sapporo to Otaru is about 32 minutes; Otaru to Niseko about 90 minutes on the Hakodate Line local (Niseko United times). Sapporo to Kutchan is ¥2,240 one way, Otaru to Niseko Station ¥1,800. Niseko United notes that services are limited, so the Otaru change decides your day. From Kutchan Station, the Niseko Bus runs up to Hirafu; from Niseko Station, Annupuri is about 10 minutes by local bus or taxi.
Option 5: Drive
Niseko United’s route from Sapporo is Route 230 over the Nakayama Pass to Kimobetsu: about 92 km to Grand Hirafu (then Route 276 and Route 5), 97 km to Niseko Village and 105 km to Annupuri. Bring your International Driving Permit and Australian licence, and make sure the car has winter tyres. If the pass is snowing hard, the bus driver is a better bet than you.
Going home
Back to Sapporo: the Resort Liner leaves Hirafu at 14:00 and 16:35, and the White Liner adds a 15:00 bus from Hirafu to Sapporo Station (arrives 17:30) this season. Flying out the next morning? Going straight to the airport is simpler: see New Chitose to Niseko. Then pick your village on where to stay.
Questions people actually ask
- How do I get from Sapporo to Niseko?
- The easiest way is the Hokkaido Resort Liner, which collects from Sapporo city hotels each morning from 7:35 and reaches the Hirafu Welcome Center at 11:10. It is ¥6,000 adult and must be booked. The cheapest is the Chuo Bus Highway Niseko, a walk-on bus from Sapporo Station that ends at the Annupuri side of Niseko, not Hirafu.
- How long does it take from Sapporo to Niseko?
- About 3 hours by bus. The Resort Liner leaves city hotels between 7:35 and 8:25 and reaches Hirafu at 11:10. By car, Niseko United gives about 92 km to Grand Hirafu via the Nakayama Pass. By train, Sapporo to Otaru is about 32 minutes and Otaru to Niseko about 90 minutes, plus the wait between them.
- Is there a cheap bus from Sapporo to Niseko?
- Yes. The Chuo Bus Highway Niseko needs no booking and takes IC cards. The fare from Sapporo Station is ¥2,820 to the Annupuri end and ¥2,320 to Kutchan. It does not go to Hirafu village, so for Hirafu you change at Kutchan or take a taxi.
- Can I take the train from Sapporo to Niseko?
- Yes. Take JR to Otaru, then the Hakodate Line local to Kutchan or Niseko Station. Sapporo to Kutchan is ¥2,240 one way. Niseko United says services are limited, so plan around the Otaru connection, and you still need a bus or taxi from the station to the lifts.
- Can I day-trip Niseko from Sapporo?
- You can, but it is a long day: about 3 hours each way on the bus. Last season the Chuo ski bus left Sapporo Station at 7:50 and brought you back from Hirafu at 14:39 or 15:59. Personally I'd sleep in Niseko for at least two nights instead.
