Tokyo to Niseko: fly to New Chitose, then the bus.

Transfers · Fares and times checked 11 Oct 2026

Most Australians reach Niseko through Tokyo: land at Haneda or Narita, connect to New Chitose (CTS) near Sapporo, then ride a ski bus for two and a half hours. There is a train option too, and it is a lovely day out, but it is a day. Here is how the connections line up for 2026–27, the bus cut-off times that decide whether you sleep in Niseko tonight, and what to do if you miss them.

Best when

  • Flying Tokyo to New Chitose if you want to be in Niseko the same day.
  • Booking the domestic flight from the airport you land at.
  • The shinkansen if the journey is part of the holiday and bags are light.

Skip when

  • A domestic flight that lands at CTS after about 18:45: the last bus has gone.
  • Crossing Tokyo from Narita to Haneda with ski bags on arrival day.
  • The train route if you want to ski tomorrow morning fresh.

My pick

Personally I’d fly. Book a Tokyo to New Chitose flight that lands by early afternoon, book the White Liner if you are staying in Hirafu or the Resort Liner for a hotel elsewhere, and you are in Niseko for dinner. If your international flight lands in Tokyo late, sleep at the airport hotel and fly up in the morning rather than racing the last bus.

Tokyo to Niseko flights

There is no airport at Niseko. A Tokyo to Niseko flight means flying to New Chitose (CTS), Sapporo’s main airport, and taking the ski bus from there. Tokyo to Sapporo is one of Japan’s busiest air routes, and both Tokyo airports fly it.

Spring Japan also flies Narita to New Chitose, but its published winter schedule runs the route only until 16 November 2026, so don’t plan a ski trip around it.

Landing at Haneda on an international flight puts you in Terminal 3. The free shuttle bus runs to Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 for the domestic flight. Landing at Narita, book Peach or Jetstar from Narita rather than crossing Tokyo to Haneda with ski bags. Fares change by date and airline, so we don’t quote them. Check the sports-bag allowance before you book, especially on Peach and Jetstar, or skip the ski bag and rent skis in Niseko.

Domestic flights arrive at the domestic terminal at New Chitose, which is also where every Niseko ski bus leaves from.

Both need a booking. Allow 45 minutes between a domestic landing and your bus. Full timetables and the train option are on New Chitose to Niseko, and the Hirafu bus stops are on the Niseko map.

The train: Tokyo to Niseko by shinkansen

Hayabusa trains run Tokyo to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto in about 4 hours; ¥24,400 for a reserved seat in normal season on a fare search we ran in October 2026. From Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto you take the Hokuto limited express to Oshamanbe, then the Hakodate Line local to Niseko Station (Niseko United gives Hakodate to Oshamanbe about 75 minutes and Oshamanbe to Niseko about 80 minutes, with limited services). Add the waits and it is a full day.

The other rail way round is Tokyo to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto, the limited express to Sapporo, then the Sapporo to Niseko options on Sapporo to Niseko. Either way, send big bags ahead by courier if your lodge accepts deliveries.

Landing in Tokyo late

A late international arrival plus a domestic connection is where trips go wrong. If the domestic flight would land at New Chitose after about 18:45, stop: sleep near your Tokyo airport, take a morning flight, and catch a midday bus. Or fly to New Chitose that night, sleep in Sapporo, and take the Resort Liner from your city hotel the next morning (pick-ups from 7:35).

Questions people actually ask

What is the fastest way from Tokyo to Niseko?
Fly from Haneda or Narita to New Chitose (CTS), about an hour and a half in the air from Haneda, then take a reserved airport bus: 2 hours 30 minutes on the White Liner to Hirafu, or about 2 hours 45 minutes on the Resort Liner. Door to door, plan on most of a day.
How long is the flight from Tokyo to Niseko?
There is no airport at Niseko, so you fly to New Chitose (CTS). From Haneda it is about 1 hour 30 minutes in the air on JAL, ANA, AIRDO or Skymark. From Narita it is about 1 hour 40 to 1 hour 50 minutes on Peach or Jetstar Japan. Then allow 45 minutes to reach the bus and about 2 hours 30 minutes on the White Liner to Hirafu.
Which airlines fly from Tokyo to New Chitose for Niseko?
From Haneda: JAL and Skymark (Terminal 1), ANA and AIRDO (Terminal 2). From Narita this winter: Peach (Terminal 1) and Jetstar Japan (Terminal 3). Spring Japan's published winter schedule runs Narita to New Chitose only until 16 November 2026, so it is not a ski-season option.
Can I take the train from Tokyo to Niseko?
Yes, but it takes most of a day. The Tohoku and Hokkaido shinkansen runs Tokyo to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto in about 4 hours (¥24,400 reserved, normal season). From there it is the Hokuto limited express to Oshamanbe and the Hakodate Line local to Niseko, which Niseko United says has limited services.
Which Tokyo airport is best for Niseko?
Whichever one your international flight lands at. Haneda has the most flights to New Chitose; Narita has the low-cost carriers. Changing between Narita and Haneda costs you hours, so book the domestic leg from the airport you land at.
What time do I need to land at New Chitose to reach Niseko the same day?
After a domestic flight both bus companies ask for 45 minutes. That means landing by 15:00 for the last White Liner (15:45) or by about 18:45 for the last Resort Liner (19:30, from 7 Dec 2026).
Does the Hokkaido shinkansen go to Niseko?
Not yet. It ends at Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto. The extension towards Sapporo, with a stop at Kutchan, is still under construction, so for 2026–27 you change to conventional trains at Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto.
