When to ski Niseko, month by month.

When to go · 2026–27 dates checked 11 Oct 2026

Niseko’s reputation rests on January, and the numbers back it up. But the season runs from late November to early May, lift prices move four times, and the busiest weeks line up with Australian school holidays. This page puts the official 2026–27 dates next to thirty years of Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) weather normals for Kutchan, the town below the resorts, so you can pick your week on facts rather than folklore.

Best when

  • Mid to late January for the coldest, snowiest stretch.
  • February for the deepest base, outside Lunar New Year week.
  • March for big bases, more sun and regular-season prices.

Skip when

  • Christmas to New Year if queues and full restaurants ruin your day.
  • Early December if you can only go once and need guaranteed cover.
  • April at Niseko Village or Hanazono: they close on 4 and 11 April.

My pick

Personally I’d suggest the last week of January or the first days of February. The Australian school holidays have finished, Japanese New Year is long gone, the JMA normals say it is the coldest and one of the snowiest parts of the winter, and Lunar New Year (6 Feb 2027) hasn’t arrived yet. If those dates don’t work, early March is my second choice: deeper base, longer days, and the lift price drops a band.

Month by month

Late November to mid-December

All four resorts are scheduled to open on 28 Nov 2026, and early-season prices run to 11 Dec (¥8,800 for an All-Mountain adult day, well below peak). Kutchan averages 95 cm of November snowfall and 253 cm in December, but the base is still building, so how much terrain is open depends on the year. From 12 Dec, night skiing starts at all four resorts and Niseko Village group lessons begin.

Best for flexible riders, cheaper beds, a quieter Hirafu.

Christmas and New Year

Peak season starts on 24 Dec (¥13,500 All-Mountain adult day). This is when Australian summer holidays and Japanese New Year overlap, and Hirafu is at its fullest. By the normals, December is already one of the two snowiest months. Restaurants and ski school need booking weeks ahead.

Skip if you hate queues and don’t book ahead.

January

The heart of the season. Kutchan averages 253 cm of snowfall in January and a mean of −5.4°C, the coldest month, with only 47 hours of sunshine. That is the cold, cloudy, snowing-again pattern Niseko is known for. Early January is still holiday busy; after the Australian school term starts in late January, it eases.

Best for powder, tree runs, cold-smoke days.

February

Snowfall eases a little (187 cm in Kutchan) but the average deepest snow reaches 181 cm, the most of the season. Lunar New Year falls on 6 Feb 2027 and brings a busy week. Peak prices run to 28 Feb.

Best for the deepest base and full terrain.

March

Regular prices from 1 Mar (¥12,600 All-Mountain adult day) and spring rates from 23 Mar. Kutchan still averages 122 cm of snowfall, the base is still about 170 cm on average, and sunshine nearly doubles on February. Night skiing ends on 22 Mar.

Best for families, value, blue-sky days.

April and early May

Niseko Village closes on 4 Apr, the NISEKO UNITED shuttle stops the same day, and Hanazono closes on 11 Apr. Final-season prices start on 5 Apr (¥6,300 All-Mountain adult day) and Grand Hirafu and Annupuri run to 5 May. Kutchan’s April mean is 4.9°C: expect spring snow and soft afternoons.

Best for cheap late-season laps at Hirafu and Annupuri.

Then book the rest

Once the dates are set, pick your village on where to stay, check the lift pass for that season band, and sort the airport bus on getting to Niseko. Peak weeks fill first.

Questions people actually ask

What is the best month to ski Niseko?
January for snow: Kutchan, the town below the resorts, averages 253 cm of snowfall in January on Japan Meteorological Agency normals, with the coldest temperatures of the season. February has the deepest base. Late January and February outside Lunar New Year week are the sweet spot if you also want fewer people.
When does the Niseko ski season start and end?
For 2026–27 all four Niseko United resorts are scheduled to open on 28 Nov 2026, subject to snow. Niseko Village closes on 4 Apr 2027, Hanazono on 11 Apr, and Grand Hirafu and Annupuri on 5 May.
Is Niseko good in March?
Yes, and cheaper. Kutchan still averages 122 cm of snowfall in March and the deepest base of the season sits around February and March. Lift prices drop from peak to regular on 1 March (¥12,600 an All-Mountain adult day) and to spring rates on 23 March.
Is December too early for Niseko?
Early December depends on the year's first storms. By the normals, December snowfall is as heavy as January's but the base is still building. From 12 Dec night skiing starts at all four resorts and Niseko Village's group lessons begin, which is why mid-December is a good family window before the Christmas peak.
When is Niseko busiest?
Christmas to New Year, Lunar New Year (6 Feb 2027) and the Australian summer school holidays from mid-December to late January. Niseko United's peak lift-price season is 24 Dec 2026 to 28 Feb 2027.
